Alice Longyu Gao + Arthritis Kid + Los3r

  • Club SAW 67 Nicholas Street Ottawa, ON, K1N 7B9 Canada (map)

Alice Longyu Gao on-stage performing their most loved songs from their debut trilogy. Their debut trilogy includes 3 EPs: High Dragon Universe (2022), Let’s Hope Heteros Fail, Learn, and Retire (2023), and Assembling Symbols Into My Own Poetry (2024).

Alice Longyu Gao

For Alice Longyu Gao, remaining indefinable has proven to be one of their most formidable strengths. As one of the unwitting pioneers of the hyperpop movement, Longyu Gao — often referred to as ALG by friends and fans — forged a path for themselves by channeling unfiltered humor and rage into their energetic early work. The multidisciplinary artist strives to open portals to their past, present and future through their work, a nonlinear journey reflected upon in their new mini-album, Assembling symbols into my own poetry, the final chapter in their debut trilogy.

Released October 23rd via ÂŁÏÇÉ THE ŁÄBĘŁ, Assembling takes the words that they’ve spent their entire career scrutinizing and throws them skyward, allowing vulnerability to take control. It’s the sound of a cup that has simply floweth over, it’s the sound of an artist who’s ready to lay it all bare in the name of love. “These songs were made when my life felt alive again. This music talks to my romantic soul, the fountain in my heart, which is where my art has come from since birth,” Longyu Gao says of the project. Much like the fountain from which it came, Assembling offers space for reflection — demolishing childhood trauma on “Little Piggy” or reaching anthemic epiphany on the Danny Brown collaboration “Bird W/O Nest” — and out flows a pure expression of the messy multiplicities that make up the human experience.

Arthritis Kid

Arthritis Kid is an Ottawa-based pop artist that stepped into the music scene mid-2020. With the influences of Coco & Clair Clair, Ashnikko, and Charli XCX, Arthritis Kid took time to cultivate her “real pop girly” image through catchy synths and tongue-in-cheek lyrics. After the release of a handful of singles and an EP in 2022, Arthritis Kid has painted the town in pink glitter with her latest EP Tear My Heart Out. In 2023 and 2024, Arthritis Kid has performed with Debaser, CRIP RAVE, Spectrasonic, and opened for My Son The Hurricane, pushing her into the spotlight as Ottawa’s new pop sensation. And while it’s been over a year since her last release, you know she’s always ready to serve up something sweet (and maybe a little sour).

Los3r

Los3r is a three-piece experimental pop band from Ottawa, focusing on pushing sonic boundaries, establishing heartfelt melancholic lyrics, while maintaining a high energy. "Automated Love Trials - Computerised Academy Demos”

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Debaser operates on the stolen land of the Anishinaabeg Algonquin people in so-called Ottawa. As a non-Indigenous-led arts organization that presents work by Indigenous artists and other artists of colour, and which benefits from funding from the Canadian government that continues to deprioritize access to clean drinking water for many Indigenous communities, we at Debaser strive to remain mindful of how ongoing colonial processes position us in relation to the artists we support and the work we present. We also acknowledge the building that Debaser and Club SAW are based in, the Arts Court, is the former Ottawa Courthouse, right next to the former Ottawa Jail. While we acknowledge the dark history of these buildings and the oppressive connotations of prisons and courts for Indigenous and Black community members, we also thank Indigenous and Black artists and community members for reclaiming this space and filling it with art and performance that have the potential to transform and educate the community. Learn more about this land acknowledgement and find educational resources and ways to support at www.debaser.ca/land-acknowledgement.
