"There's beauty in all, I always improvise and look for patterns. Over time enough patterns will form and a direction becomes clear, and like a sculptor, I start to shape the sound into what I want." -Wellington Sanipe
Introducing Wellington Sanipe, an ambient musician from Ottawa who will be performing at 6:30 PM in the Theatre at Pique Winter edition on December 10th!
We had the pleasure of interviewing him ahead of his Pique debut where we discussed his songwriting process and what to expect from his performance this Saturday.
Q. How would you describe your sound or the path that you take to get to your sound?
A: I always start my sets with a piano, I go in thinking I will be making "normal" classical music today and slowly the experimental Gods start to pull me in a different direction to which I indulge. I would describe my music as 'close your eyes and let yourself feel'.
Q. Is there a premeditated approach to your compositions or does your improvisation dictate the resulting sound?
A: There's beauty in all, I always improvise and look for patterns. Over time enough patterns will form and a direction becomes clear, and like a sculptor, I start to shape the sound into what I want.
Q. What moments or chapters in your life have given you the sharpest direction in making your unique ambient sounds?
A: My childhood is definitely a source for my ideas and sounds. I'm from a small village in the archipelagos of southern Nigeria. Growing up I always listened to the sound of water, trees and birds and now I create music that makes room for those sounds.
Q. What can fans expect from your Performance at Pique on December 10th?
A: I like the element of surprise, for that reason I don't want to say too much. However, I will be playing a couple new songs and will be using an unusual device as an instrument. Don't try to imagine it, come out and see for yourself.
